Ingredients
For 5 rolls:
5 medium tortillas (approx. 8-inch diameter)
5 sausages (cooked, such as pre-cooked smoked sausage or hot dogs)
5 slices cheese (cheddar, mozzarella, or your favorite)
2 large eggs
6 tablespoons breadcrumbs (plain or panko)
Oil for frying (vegetable, canola, or sunflower oil)
For the Sauce:
2 tablespoons mayonnaise
2 tablespoons tomato sauce (ketchup or marinara)
1 clove garlic, minced
4 small pickled gherkins, finely grated or minced
A pinch of salt (or to taste)
Instructions
Step 1: Prepare the Sauce
In a small bowl, combine the mayonnaise, tomato sauce, minced garlic, grated gherkins, and salt. Mix well until fully combined. Set aside.
Step 2: Prepare the Egg and Breadcrumbs
In one bowl, crack the eggs. Add a pinch of salt and whisk well with a fork until the yolks and whites are fully combined and slightly frothy.
In a separate shallow bowl, place the breadcrumbs.
Step 3: Assemble the Tortilla Rolls
Lay out one tortilla on a clean surface.
Spread a thin layer of the prepared sauce evenly over the tortilla, leaving a small border at the edges.
Place a slice of cheese in the center of the tortilla, on top of the sauce.
Place one sausage on top of the cheese slice.
Tightly roll up the tortilla, starting from the edge closest to you, tucking in the sides as you roll to create a secure roll. Repeat for the remaining tortillas, cheese slices, and sausages.
Step 4: Coat and Fry the Rolls
Heat about ½ inch of oil in a large skillet over medium heat. The oil is ready when a breadcrumb dropped in it sizzles gently.
Dip each tortilla roll into the beaten egg, ensuring it’s fully coated.
Immediately roll the egg-coated tortilla in the breadcrumbs, pressing gently to ensure the breadcrumbs adhere well on all sides.
Carefully place the breadcrumb-coated tortilla rolls into the hot oil, seam-side down first.
Fry for 2-3 minutes on each side, turning occasionally, until golden brown and crispy. Ensure all sides are evenly browned. The cheese inside should be melted and gooey.
Step 5: Serve
Remove the fried tortilla sausage rolls from the skillet and place them on a plate lined with paper towels to drain excess oil.
Let them cool slightly before serving. Serve warm as a snack, appetizer, or light meal.
Notes
Ingredient Substitutions:
- Sausages: Use chicken, turkey, or plant-based sausages for a lighter or vegetarian option.
- Breadcrumbs: Swap with panko breadcrumbs for extra crispiness.
- Cheese: Any melting cheese, like mozzarella or gouda, works beautifully.
Storage & Reheating:
- Storage: Store leftover rolls in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 2 days.
- Reheating: Reheat in a skillet over low heat or in an air fryer to restore crispiness.
Pro Tips:
- Prevent Leaking: Ensure the tortillas are rolled tightly to prevent the cheese from oozing out during frying.
- Crispier Coating: Double dip in egg and breadcrumbs for an extra-crunchy exterior.
Troubleshooting & Common Mistakes:
- Rolls Falling Apart: Secure the edges of the tortilla tightly when rolling.
- Burnt Breadcrumbs: Fry over medium heat to avoid burning the coating before the cheese melts.
Variations & Dietary Adaptations:
- Spicy Version: Add a few dashes of hot sauce to the sauce or sprinkle chili flakes inside the roll.
- Gluten-Free: Use gluten-free tortillas and breadcrumbs.
- Healthier Option: Bake the rolls in the oven at 400°F (200°C) for 15-20 minutes, flipping halfway through.
